The Citizen Potawatomi Nation’s Cultural Heritage Center received recognition as one of the top 10 Model Museum/Cultural Centers by the Association of Tribal Archives, Libraries and Museums in 2020. The CHC also won numerous Oklahoma Museum Association awards in 2021.
After decades of being hindered by inconsistent funding and bureaucratic red tape, the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City opens to the public Sept. 18 and 19. The weekend includes tours, demonstrations, performances, family activities and more.
The Field Museum in Chicago is home to nearly 300 Potawatomi artifacts in collections and on display as part of the museum’s Native American Hall.
Toupin family descendant Karen Whitecotton previously served as the director of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Heritage Center. She now runs her own consulting business, Heritage Museum Services LLC, and recently accepted the position of OKPOP director of collections.
The Cultural Heritage Center’s final gallery, Seventh Generation, celebrates the Tribe’s successes as well as educates the public on the Nation’s strength, endurance and perseverance.
The Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Center plans to expand their services and programs in the new year, becoming not just a museum but a community and cultural center.
