“The Ones We Left Behind” is the latest release from Potawatomi musician Elexa Dawson and remembers the 1838 removal of the Potawatomi from their Indiana homelands. The song was shared at the July 2025 dedication ceremony for Fire Keepers Circle, a Kansas public art project that commemorates the Potawatomi Trail of Death. Dawson wrote the song especially for the dedication ceremony. The sculpture is in Olathe, Kansas, near where the Trail of Death crossed Kansas.
