CPN Legislative Update – August 29

A number of new business topics were addressed by the Citizen Potawatomi Legislature during its August 29 meeting. The Legislature passed of the tribal budgets for the fiscal year 2014 and Gary Bourbonnais was once again confirmed as the head of the Election Committee.  New board members were also appointed to the Election Committee.

Legislators also passed two separate resolutions enrolling 212 applicants as new members of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation and resolutions were approved on fee-to-trust acquisition applications for three properties to be used for non-gaming purposes.

The legislature also approved the appointment and terms of office for members of the CPN Floodplain Management Board.

The Nation will join the National Indian Gaming Association (NIGA) after the legislature approved its pending membership and payment of dues. The non-profit organization of 184 Indian Nations and non-voting associate members seeks to advance the lives of Native Americans in economic, social and political terms. Its mission is to protect and preserve the welfare of tribes who strive for self-sufficiency through gaming enterprises on tribal land.

In addition to its participation in the NIGA, legislators unanimously approved a resolution appointing delegates and alternates to the National Congress of American Indians annual session.
