SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma Lions Service Foundation and the Shawnee Noonday Lions Club will team up with the Central Oklahoma Community Action Agency Area Agency on Aging, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, and the Oklahoma Insurance Department to provide a free mobile health screening and health fair that will be open to the public. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Citizen Potawatomi Nation South Reunion Hall, located at 1700 Gordon Cooper Drive on the Potawatomi Nation Festival Grounds.
The Lions Club of Oklahoma has offered the use of its Mobile Health Screening Unit, which will provide free screenings for some of the most critical health issues in our state. The mobile unit can screen for glaucoma, diabetes, cholesterol, visual tests, basic pulmonary (lung) functioning, high blood pressure and bone density.
These screenings are important because glaucoma and diabetes are two of the major causes of blindness and often are not discovered until irreversible damage has occurred. Undetected high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels can be life-threatening. The bone density screening will be available to women 40 and older because osteoporosis in women is a critical concern as a woman ages.
This event will also offer a free health fair involving many different organizations such as the State Health Insurance Department, Social Security Administration, Department of Human Services, Senior Law Project, and COCAA. Information on Medicare, prescription medication and senior housing also will be available.
In addition, Audiologist Kurt Kalies will be at the event providing free hearing screenings.
