For decades, Lee has campaigned to make Juneteenth a federal holiday. Lee helped to lead a 2.5 mile walk in recognition of the 2.5 years it took for the news of the Emancipation Proclamation to reach Texas. In June 2021, at the age of 94, Lee joined President Biden as he signed the bill to make Juneteenth a federal holiday into law. Additional speakers include Tribal Chairman John "Rocky" Barrett, Gary Jones, Rev. John A. Reed, Rev. Major Jemison, Anastasia Pittman, Rev. Clarence Prevost, Marcus Clayton and Bruce Fisher." This event is sponsored by Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Oklahoma Baptist University, the Avedis Foundation and Bethany Children's Health Center.
