The Native American Speaks: 12-23-12

Janet Draper, Citizen Potawatomi Nation Indian Child Welfare Program director, is the guest. Ms. Draper explains the federal Indian Child Welfare Act’s (ICWA) protections for Indian young people, especially with regard to ensuring that those who are in court or Department of Human Services protection/custody remain with their tribe or a Native American foster family.

Draper talks about a situation in which an Oklahoma woman is circulating a petition seeking to weaken throes ICWA protections. She says the better thing to do would be to enact legislation to ensure that DHS caseworkers immediately ask if a child has Native American heritage.
