On this edition of The Native American Speaks, we recount the story of Lt. Walter ‘Dub’ Vincent, native Oklahoman and uncle of Kim (Vincent) Anderson, who is the wife of Citizen Potawatomi Nation member Craig Anderson and mother Navy Lt. Brooke (Anderson) Deroschers. In April 1944, Lt. Vincent and six fellow Marines died in a plane crash in bad weather on the South pacific island of Espiritu Santo.

For decades, the Defense Department believed the seven and their plane had gone into the ocean. In the 2000s, author Dan Bookout discovered the plane on Espiritu Santo. In 2007, the Andersons went on a trek through the jungle on Espiritu Santo to the crash site and interested the Defense Department in identifying the Marines’ remains and bringing them back to the U.S. There was a funeral for Lt. Vincent in Tulsa on May 5, 2012.

On this TNAS, we listen to Craig Andersron’s narration of a documentary about that 2007 adventure on Espiritu Santo and a short interview with Lt. Deroschers conducted on the day of the funeral.
