The Native American Speaks: 01-06-13

The Idle No More movement is the topic of discussion on this edition. Guests are Shawnee resident Sophia Thurman (Navajo), who planned and publicized the Idle No More event in downtown Oklahoma City on Saturday, December 29, 2012, and Juskwa Burnett (Cree), a native of Canada and current resident of Ponca City, Oklahoma, who attended the event.

Thurman and Burnett explain the origins Idle No More on December 10, 2012, as opposition to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s efforts to abrogate long-standing treaties between Canada’s First Nation’s and the British monarchy. They also explain how the movement is relevant to situations in the U.S. and in Oklahoma.
