Citizen Potawatomi Nation members have had many accomplishments and earned distinctions in academic, athletic and artistic fields over the past few months. Here are just a few of their success stories.
Tecumseh, Okla. High School alum Junior Lowden, a Curly-family member, was inducted into the Southwestern Oklahoma State University Athletics Hall of Fame in January 2014. Lowden, a three sport athlete in high school, played at Southwestern from 1990-95 and was an all-conference honoree each season he played. He is only one of two Southwestern players in the program’s history to have been an All-American in three different seasons, the latter two of which were accomplished after suffering a season-ending knee injury during the 1993 campaign.
13 year old Camree Bennett of Sapulpa, Okla. took second place at the Tulsa Indian Arts Festival in February 2014. The seventh grader’s piece, “Buffalo Dreams”, was entered into the crayon drawings coompetition.
Scott City, Kans. native Ron Baker has helped lead number two ranked Shockers of Wichita State to an undefeated regular season championship of the Missouri Valley Conference. Baker, a redshirt sophomore, was recently featured by Sports Illustrated also helped the Shockers take their first conference tournament in 27 years and became only the second team ever to start their season 34-0.
Brayden Keahnah-Talbot was recently named the Student of the Month for February at the Shawnee Early Childhood Center.
Lindenwood University’s Mary Killman, a U.S. Olympic team member, helped her university team sweep the North Regional Synchronized Swimming Championships. Killman took first place in the trio, duet, solo and team competitions and will next compete in the national championships at Miami (Ohio) University on Mar. 20-22.
