Potawatomi Success Stories – December 2013

Citizen Potawatomi Nation members have had many accomplishments and earned distinctions in academic, athletic and artistic fields over the past few months. Here are just a few of their success stories. If you have someone whose accomplishments deserve recognition, please email hownikan@potawatomi.org.

Dakota Hagan is a senior at Blackwell (Okla.) High School and was placed 3rd in his weight division at the 2013 Okla. High School Wrestling Championships. He was named to the First Team of the 2014 Oklahoma State Wrestling Team and has been formally invited to serve Team USA in the Down Under Sports Competition in Australia.

 

Madi Eyster, a Kennedy family descendent, became the first volleyball player in Weatherford (Okla.) High School history to be selected to the All-State volleyball team. She was also selected as the Yale Volleyball Tournament MVP, Clinton Southwest Showdown All-Tournament team, Bethany Invitational All-Tournament team and as MVP for the Weatherford High School team’s 2013 season. She also made the State Tournament All-Tournament Team.

Andrew Banta, a senior at Okemah (Okla.) High School is a member of the Nadeau family. He was selected to attend the Dartmouth Native American Fly-In Program. The program, hosted at Dartmouth University, hosts students from across the U.S. who have shown an interest in Native American studies and communities. Andrew was selected in part due to his high academic standing (4.15 GPA) as well as his leadership of the Este Cate program at Okemah High School. He is also a member of the football, baseball, powerlifting and academic teams and currently serves as the Senior Class President at Okemah.

While attending an Offense-Defense Football Camp this summer, Ayrton Hignojos of Round Rock, Texas was named an Offense-Defense All-American. Ayrton’s selection will see him participate in the Offense-Defense Bowl in Orlando, Florida. Ayrton is a kicker and center for the Wilco Junior Tigers in Round Rock. He has also been chosen for the Football University 6th Grade All-Star Team in Austin, Texas.
