People are different and the ways in which they handle stress are also different. What may be stressful to you may not be to another; therefore, it is important to keep in mind that just because you are stressed does not mean that you are weak. It means that you have become alarmed to a task in which you find challenging.  The only person that knows how you feel when you are stressed is you.  

Stress can be both positive and negative. For example, attending college or changing a job can be stressful but in the long run can also make a positive impact in your life. When you are feeling stressed, it can be helpful to think of whatever is happening as a positive addition to your life as it can help to motivate and/or drive you to meet your goals. It helps to just think positively! The ways we think about things affect our feelings and behaviors. Although we may not be able to control all the things that happen to us in life we can control how we think about and respond to them.

Stress can also have negative effects on a person. It can be mentally and physically defeating. The good thing about the negative side of stress is that there are ways that can help a person deal with the demands of everyday life. If you are feeling overwhelmed with kids, work, bills, relationships, or anything else just take a deep breath and realize that there is hope for feeling better.

Below are some methods to help cope with stress.  Because we are unique and handle life differently, pick the method or methods that work for you.

  • Be realistic – you can’t be in numerous places at one time.  You can sometimes say no to others.  It is important to prioritize your duties.
  • Meditate -take a break from your busy world. Try listening to music while meditating.
  • Breathe – Smell the roses and blow out the candle. Take a deep breath in threw the nostrils and slowly exhale through the mouth.
  • Shed the Superwoman/Superman persona – perfection is almost an impossible quality. Don’t expect perfection from yourself or others.  It is important to have realistic goals. Don’t be scared to ask others for help.
  • Exercise – This method is good for the body and mind.  Remember that stress affects you physically and mentally.
  • Share – Air your feelings with family, friends, significant others, a counselor. 
  • Reach Out – You do not have to go through this alone.
