The WIC program's purpose is to provide nutritious supplemental foods to program participants using vouchers. The WIC program serves as an adjunct to good health care during critical stages of a child's growth and development.
Serious nutrition problems can be alleviated. The foods supplied through WIC are not intended to serve as a complete diet; they are meant to supplement the foods already being consumed by the participant.
The WIC Nutrition Program was authorized by the Child Nutrition Act of 1996. As amended, it states that Congress finds that a substantial number of infants and children, up to age 5, and pregnant, breastfeeding, or postpartum women, from families with inadequate income, are at special risk with respect to their physical and mental health because of inadequate nutrition and health or both.
Standards for participation are the same for everyone regardless of age, sex, race, national origin, or handicap. ALL RACES MAY APPLY!
