Notice: The Citizen Potawatomi Nation is applying for Periodical mailing status for the HowNiKan. This should reduce mailing costs by 30% or more below Presort Standard rates and ensure that the Postal Service handles the HowNiKan as it does First Class Mail.

As part of the Periodical status application process, we must gather “Subscription Requests” from tribal members. Please click here to download a form to fill out and mail back to: HowNiKan Subscription Request, Citizen Potawatomi Nation, 1601 S. Gordon Cooper Dr., Shawnee, OK 74801.

IF YOU NOW RECEIVE THE HOWNIKAN, YOU WILL CONTINUE TO RECEIVE IT EVEN IF YOU DO NOT PROVIDE A SIGNED SUBSCRIPTION FORM.

The Public Information Department handles media relations for the Nation and its government services and programs and for-profit enterprises. This involves preparing and distributing news releases and handling inquiries from radio, television, newspaper, and magazine reporters.

The PIO also produces the Citizen Potawatomi newspaper, the HowNiKan, including shooting photos, reporting and writing stories, laying out the content, and overseeing printing and distribution.

In May 2005, the Public Information Department assumed responsibility for production of the radio program “The Native American Speaks.” “TNAS” has been aired continuously since the late 1970s on Oklahoma City radio station KOKC-AM (1520), formerly KOMA-AM. Since the early 1990s, Michael Dodson, CPN Director of Public Information, has produced and hosted the program.

When the program's former owner decided to end its affiliation with “The Native American Speaks,” the Citizen Potawatomi Nation assumed responsibility for it. It will continue to air at 5:30 a.m., Central time, on Sundays on KOKC-AM. It is also now aired at 8:06 a.m. on Sundays on the CPN-owned KGFF-AM (1450) in Shawnee.

“The Native American Speaks” is now available on the Web for all CPN members and anyone else who is interested to listen to.

The latest edition can be found at the bottom of this page. The previous nine editions of the program are on the “Past TNAS Programs“ page. You can either right-click and save the audio file to your hard drive or open it directly from the Web with any MP3 player, such as Windows Media Player, iTunes player, Real Audio player, Musicmatch Jukebox, or others. If you don't have one of these players, the standard version is available free at the appropriate Web site.

Finally, the Public Information Department serves as Webmaster for the CPN's internet site, www.Potawatomi.org - coordinating upgrades of and additions to the Web site.

The Public Information Department can be reached by phone at 405-275-3121, ext. 1262 or 800-880-9880. Director Michael Dodson can be reached via e-mail at MDodson@Potawatomi.org. Nathan McKay, Assistant Director, can be reached at NMcKay@Potawatomi.org.

Click here to send an e-mail to Public Information Director Michael Dodson if you want to receive an e-mail notification when new stories, events, Language Program items, or other information is added to the Web site or it is updated in other ways. Please indicate whether you are a Citizen Potawatomi Nation member.
