District #8
Dave Carney

Dave Carney was elected to the 2009-2010 Legislature representing the vast area of District #8 (Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska) after a run-off election that closed on August 25, 2009.

He is a member of the Juneau founding family and has lived in Olympia, Washington with his wife and four children (ages 6 to 15) for the past 10 years. Dave’s wife of 18 years, Nicole Sechrist Carney, is a podiatrist and podiatric surgeon. They moved to Olympia from Montana, where Nicole was in private practice, to join a group practice in the beautiful Puget Sound area. The Carney family members enjoy boating, crabbing, hiking, and camping and are novice skiers.

Dave graduated with honors from San Francisco State University majoring in History and has had a career in residential real estate, healthcare management, and technology. He is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Coastal Business Services Group, a company based in Lacey, Washington that provides business-to-business document management, scanning, and technical services.

Since the beginning of the Regional meetings in the 1980s, Dave and his family have attended as often as possible. His three sons and daughter - Nick (15), Luke (10), Matthew (8), and Sophia (6) - are tribal members. They have all received their Potawatomi names.

Dave is especially proud to have received his name - Kagakshi, meaning Raven - from Chairman John Barrett at a special naming ceremony held at his sister’s home in Virginia. Dave’s sister, Eva Marie Carney, is the Legislative representative from District #2. Living at opposite ends of the country, their families try to share a Christmas or summer holiday together whenever possible. They are looking forward to working together for the future good of the Nation as a whole.

Dave intends to open a Potawatomi District office in Olympia, Washington in the fall with an open house, schedulex for 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Septemebr 27. He has an ambitious agenda planned to build up communication among the 2,001 members in his district. He can be reached through his website at www.Dave-Carney.com.
