The Citizen Potawatomi Nation Tribal Court is comprised of seven Supreme Court Justices, three District Court Judges, a Prosecuting Attorney, a Court Clerk, and a Drug Court Coordinator. The District Court is in session several days each week, with the Honorable Phil Lujan presiding. The Supreme Court is in session on the first Monday in October (new term) and upon the filing of an appeal.
G. William Rice is the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The Associate Justices are Angela Renee Riley, Robert Coulter, James White, Robert Coffey, Truman Carter, and Glen Dale Carter.
Phil Lujan is the Presiding Judge of the CPN District Court. His fellow district judges are Jane Braugh and Roger Wiley.
The Citizen Potawatomi Nation prosecutor is David Hall.
The Citizen Potawatomi Nation Tribal court handles civil, criminal, and juvenile matters. The filing fee for most matters is $27.00. The Court does provide forms for Divorces-- all other legal matters are referred to an attorney. The Tribal Court also issues marriage licenses.
Through a grant, the Citizen Potawatomi Nation has implemented an Adult Drug Court. The Drug Court was started in May, 2001. The Drug Court team is comprised of a judge, attorney general/prosecutor, Indian Child Welfare Program representative, treatment provider, police officer, and administration.
With the growth of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation in both population and economic development, there is a need for a non-adversarial approach to non-violent offenders in the tribal court system.
The office of the tribal court clerk is located in the CPN Administration Building at 1601 S. Gordon Cooper Dr. in Shawnee. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
